Al Benson, & The Parrot & Blue Lake Labels of Chicago Illinois – even this reissue LP is a bit rarish

I was happy to find this album last year in Sacramento, CA.
Pictured above are the front and back covers and a view of the label itself.

My quibble with the concept of this (circa 1990) LP is that none of these songs are live recordings made at the (non-existent) “Parrot Club”. Actually I am glad that all of the songs were transferred from original phonograph records, probably mostly 78s and perhaps some 45s, all on the Blue Lake or Parrot labels. The liner notes continue with the “live show” myth by being written as if an observer is giving you the ‘blow by blow’ report from this fictional club. Oh well! This approach was all in fun, I’m sure, though not much fun to me. Still there is significant actual info to be gleaned in between the storytelling bits. The recordings themselves have not been tampered with in any way (thank goodness they didn’t add any canned crowd noises!) and it is a pleasure to have these 16 rare sides all gathered together on one album. Gives a very nice insight into the depth and creativity of the rich musical scene that was going on in Chicago circa early 1950s. Robert Pruter is credited with providing the back cover photo of Al Benson, as well as supplying info on the artists.
